Self Assessment - Energy and Motivation in your Workplace

These self-assessments have been designed to have you stop and think. Its an opportunity to explore other options as the questions trigger alternative strategies and actions. Often I have found that if you have available a tool for quiet reflection the answer to your problem will become apparent.

Respond to the following questions with a tick in the Yes or No Columns

1. Do you hold regular 1-on-1 meetings with team members to talk about how they are going and listen to their issues?

2. Do team members know what is expected of them?

3. Are you measuring performance on a range of activities? e.g. In the case of sales: calls made, appointments made, proposals submitted instead of just sales achieved.

4. Are you able to recruit and retain talented people?

5. Are team members given the opportunity to be part of finding solutions to key issues in your workplace?

6. Has how you do things in your workplace improved from 12 months ago?

7. Is there a career path for your team members should they wish to progress?

8. Does your team have the right tools and training to carry out their roles effectively?

9. Are your team members doing different more challenging work to what they were doing two years ago?

10. Would your team members be able to clearly describe the mission and goals of your organization and their team?

11. With the onset of competing demands on their time are your team members able to clearly see the priorities?

12. Do you create opportunities for the team to meet out of work hours?

If you had difficulty answering Yes for most of these questions then you may have motivation and engagement issues in your workplace. In any case you ought to discuss your responses with someone else in your organisation to check your perceptions. Who knows where the conversation may lead.

Note: I have based these questions on my own experiences as a consultant, coach and researcher. The questions and the responses have not been validated. Use the responses as a guideline to improving your leadership and how people feel about working in your business. If you want to discuss your responses further my contact details are as follows:
