Self Assessment - How is your Communication?

These self-assessments have been designed to have you stop and think. Its an opportunity to explore other options as the questions trigger alternative strategies and actions. Often I have found that if you have available a tool for quiet reflection the answer to your problem will become apparent.

Respond to the following questions with a tick in the Yes or No Columns

1. Are your people able to let others finish what they say without interrupting?

 

 

2. Do your people ask questions if what’s being said is unclear?

 

 

3. Do your people pay attention to non-verbal communication?

 

 

4. Do your people consider the implications of what is being said and confirm your understanding with the speaker?

 

 

5. Are your people good at solving conflicts?

 

 

6. When the “pressure is on” are your people able to deal with emotions in a constructive way?

 

 

7. Is there absolute clarity on who is responsible for what?

 

 

8. Do your people confront issues rather than avoid them?

 

 

9. Are your people easily able to express emotions to others?

 

 

10. Generally are your people disposed to talk about issues to the right person rather than bottle them up?

 

 

 

 

 

If you had difficulty answering Yes for most of these questions then you may have communication problems in your workplace. In any case you ought to discuss your responses with someone else in your organisation to check your perceptions. It will be a good communications starter!
